Institute of Middle and Far Eastern Studies

The Institute of Middle and Far Eastern Studies of the Jagiellonian University (IBiDW UJ) is a unit of the Faculty of International and Political Studies of the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Kraków, conducting undergraduate and master’s degree studies in the field of Asian Studies (since 2013, previously in Cultural Studies), specializing in the Middle Eastern and Far Eastern Studies. The seat of the Institute is located at 3, Gronostajowa Street, at the Third Campus of the Jagiellonian University in Ruczaj estate.
The institute was established on 1 October 2010, by transformation of the Independent Department of Middle and Far Eastern Studies. The Department of Middle and Far Eastern Studies was founded in 2000 by Professor Andrzej Kapiszewski. Professor Adam Jelonek Adam Jelonek was the second director of the department. During the period of his management, in 2009, the department obtained the status of an independent unit. The third director of the Institute (2010-2011) was Professor Leszek Korporowicz. Since the year 2012, the Institute of Middle and Far East Studies has been managed by Professor Krzysztof Kościelniak.
==Fields of study==
Within particular specializations the following languages are being taught, respectively: Arabic and Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hindi. The Institute maintains extensive international contacts with universities in China (especially with Beijing University of Foreign Languages), Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Israel, Syria, Kuwait. It participates in the European Erasmus Programme and closely cooperates with Confucius Institute in Krakow.
The scientific research conducted at the Institute have both interdisciplinary and regional character, combining the methods used in sociology, anthropology, ethnology, political science and economy. They concentrate on the present day of countries lying in the area of the Institute’s interest.
